This was a technically challenging project that was done in several stages. The home was built on a steep slope resulting in a small, unfinished basement on one end of the house and a crawl space under the rest of the house that was tall on the downhill side and shallow on the uphill side. After building retaining walls on the uphill side and doing some excavating, a full daylight basement was created. The next stage was to build a three story addition and a new deck on the downhill side, the trickiest part of which was excavating 13 feet down to solid soil, a job that three excavators turned down, so we did it ourselves. Steel beams were added to the garage in order to remove posts that prevented opening car doors and a circular staircase was built from the main level to the new daylight basement. Stucco replaced L-P siding on two sides of the house, and Dr. Clark himself built some beautiful doors and cabinetry for the addition. New heating and air conditioning systems were added and an attic storage room built.
